24th August 2023
There are a range of health benefits to massage therapy, one immediate benefit is the feeling of relaxation. This happens because massage increases the release of endorphins, in turn improving a sense of well-being.
In addition, stress hormones such as; cortisone, adrenaline and norepinephrine, are significantly reduced, aiding a purer sense of happiness and ease. This in itself, lowers risk of additional health issues that are caused by stress hormones, due to their negative effect on the immune system.
Further to the above, there are many physical benefits to massage therapy. These include
reduction in muscle tension
Increase in joint mobility and flexibility
Stimulation of the lymphatic system
Increase in circulation
Improvement of the respiratory system
Enhanced appearance of skin tone
Aids recovery of soft tissue injuries
Improved sleep
When we are stressed, our bodies alert us in different ways. Specifically, by affecting the immune system- in turn, causing physical ailments in the body. Therefore, reducing stress and anxiety through massage can encourage a better sense of control over one’s stress levels and aid a sense of calm and acceptance.
There are various different types of massage, with each applying its own benefits. When seeking massage, an individual should understand their reasons and what they’re trying to achieve, to enable them to choose the best form of massage for them.
Some types of massage include:
Massage therapy, the most sought out form of massage is therapeutic massage- commonly known as Swedish massage. Its technique consists of therapeutic strokes aimed at releasing stress, promoting relaxation and improving circulation. Generally, a full body, back, neck and shoulders and legs and feet.
Reflexology, is a form of therapy that utilises pressure points to relieve specific areas of pain, applying pressure to the pressure points in the body to promote the body's ability to tap into its natural healing process. Pressure points are found in the feet, hands, face and ears.
Lymphatic draining, a whole-body massage that endeavours to promote relaxation of the nervous system, in turn improving the immune system. Lymphatic drainage can aid the reduction of swelling.
Aromatherapy, various oils are added to massage oils to promote health by understanding their properties and benefit on the body. For example, sandalwood, lavender and orange are known to reduce anxiety levels and aid relaxation.
Sports massage, this is a varied form of massage that is specific to the individual, depending on where they are in their training and/ or their physical abilities. As opposed to Swedish massage, sports massage is an application rather than a particular technique. Its aim is to heal injury and improve performance.
